Politics, Principles and Himachal’s Future: Sudhir Sharma Speaks:
Five-time MLA and former cabinet minister Sudhir Sharma reflects on his long political journey, his decision to leave Congress and join the BJP, and the lessons he has gathered from decades in public life. Speaking openly about Himachal Pradesh’s present political situation, Sharma questions the Congress government’s unfulfilled guarantees, financial management and lack of direction. He argues that the state needs a stronger, more visionary and collective approach focused on tourism, IT, employment, revenue generation and controlling migration. At the same time, he maintains that political decisions should be taken thoughtfully rather than emotionally, and firmly rules out any possibility of returning to Congress.
A Political Journey Shaped by People, Decisions and Responsibility:
For Sudhir Sharma, politics was never something he had planned as a young man. He was pursuing his MBA and was only 25 when the sudden death of his father, a well-known political figure in Kangra and Dharamshala, changed the course of his life. His father’s legacy was significant, but Sharma says it never felt like a burden. Instead, interacting with people and hearing their memories of his father became an important source of learning.
After spending years with Congress, Sharma eventually made the decision to join the BJP. He describes it as neither an emotional nor a purely political move, but a carefully considered decision shaped by what he felt was happening within the party. His presence at the Ram Temple consecration also became a point of contention, further influencing his thinking. Winning the Dharamshala by-election afterwards, he says, strengthened his belief that the decision was right.
Today, Sharma views the voter not any single politician as the true catalyst in Himachal politics. He believes that public life is a continual learning experience, as regular individuals frequently provide insights that seasoned leaders might miss.
His most pointed critique is aimed at the present Congress government, especially its ten assurances. Sharma claims that numerous promises have not materialized and contends that the government has transformed its own declarations into its greatest political obstacle. For him, promises made during elections come with an obligation that cannot be overlooked once power is attained.
He is equally concerned about Himachal’s financial condition. Sharma describes the state’s current financial management as “mismanagement” and warns against depending on loans without creating stronger sources of revenue. He points towards tourism, IT, investment and employment generation as areas requiring serious long-term planning. The growing migration of young people, he believes, is creating a social imbalance that the government must address.
On leadership, Sharma says Himachal needs more than just a powerful Chief Minister. What the state requires, he argues, is visionary and collective leadership capable of making difficult decisions for the future rather than merely managing the present.
Sharma states that his personal relationships have mostly stayed unchanged despite shifting political affiliations. He maintains profound respect for the late Virbhadra Singh and his family, clearly differentiating between altering a political party and altering personal relationships.
Looking ahead, Sharma is unequivocal about his own political future: he says he will remain with the BJP and does not see a return to Congress. For him, politics ultimately comes down to one principle: deliver for the people, because voters remember what leaders promise and what they actually accomplish.
