When Courage Challenges Tradition:
Coming to theatres on October 16, 2026, Thaapi is an upcoming Punjabi sports drama/ Film directed and written by Jagdeep Warring and produced by Amanpreet Singh. The film stars Neeru Bajwa alongside Sunny Singh, who makes his much-awaited Punjabi film debut.
The story follows Bhakhtaur Singh, a 70-year-old undefeated wrestler who is deeply attached to his family’s sporting legacy. But when his family struggles to produce a male heir, his daughter-in-law Kammo takes matters into her own hands. She forms a girls’ kabaddi team in the village, challenging old beliefs and proving that strength and legacy do not belong to one gender. Their journey eventually takes them towards an international match against New Zealand’s national team, changing Bhakhtaur’s understanding of family, pride and succession.
When the Team Becomes the Story:
Some movie promotions are loud. Some are glamorous. But Thaapi has found something much more powerful, togetherness. With the release date getting closer, the cast and team have brought the spirit of their film to social media in a simple yet eye-catching way. Nikita Grover, Aashi, Simran C. Chahal, Pawan Deep Kaur (Pawan Johal) and Hashneen Chauhan have come together with matching profile pictures featuring the team jersey. At first glance, it may look like just another promotional idea. But look a little closer and there is a beautiful connection with the film itself.
On screen, these women come together as a kabaddi team. Off screen, they are showing the same unity through their digital presence. One picture, one identity and one team, just like the spirit of Thaapi. And that is what makes the campaign feel special. It does not look like five individual stars promoting one film. It looks like a real team preparing for a big game.
More Than Just a Sports Film:
While kabaddi forms the heart of Thaapi, the film goes far beyond the sports ground. At its core, the story explores family, tradition, gender equality, courage and the meaning of legacy. It questions the idea that only a son can carry forward a family’s name and shows what can happen when women are given the chance to lead.
The emotional path of Kammo and the girls’ team provides the narrative with its true power. Their struggle involves not just clinching a victory; it also entails earning respect, gaining confidence, and securing a place in a world that has predetermined their potential and limitations.
A Strong Creative Team:
With Jagdeep Warring at the helm as writer and director and Amanpreet Singh backing the project as producer, Thaapi brings together a team focused on combining sport with emotion. Neeru Bajwa adds her expertise and charisma to the film, while Sunny Singh makes his debut in Punjabi cinema with a role that contributes an exciting new dimension to the project. But perhaps the biggest strength of Thaapi is its ensemble spirit. The girls’ kabaddi team is not presented as a collection of individuals; it is presented as one force.
Why Thaapi Feels Different:
There is something refreshing about a film where the promotion itself starts reflecting the message of the story. The matching profile pictures may be a small digital gesture, but they carry a bigger message:
when everyone stands together, the team becomes stronger. That is the magic Thaapi is creating even before reaching theatres.
Thaapi offers a blend of sports, emotions, family values, and female empowerment, ensuring it is more than just a kabaddi tale. It tells a tale of defying expectations, summoning bravery, and realizing that occasionally the most powerful legacy is the one that catches everyone by surprise. The game begins on October 16, 2026. And this time, the whole team is stepping onto the mat together.
