The Legacy They Never Expected:
What happens when a legacy built over decades is expected to continue in exactly the same way? Thaapi explores that question through Bhakhtaur Singh, a 70-year-old undefeated wrestler whose pride is deeply connected to his family’s sporting identity. When his grandson has no child, Bhakhtaur begins hoping for a male heir to carry the family name forward. But his daughter-in-law Kammo chooses a different path:
she brings together village girls to form a kabaddi team, turning an old idea of legacy into something unexpected and inspiring.

Kammo’s decision to create a girls’ kabaddi team becomes the heart of this journey. As the village girls face challenges, ridicule and pressure, their determination slowly transforms into a larger fight for recognition. Their journey eventually leads to a major sporting challenge against New Zealand’s national team, raising the stakes far beyond the village.

A Promising Cast and Fresh Directorial Voice:
The film brings together Neeru Bajwa and Sunny Singh in the lead. For Sunny Singh, Thaapi marks his Punjabi cinema debut, adding an interesting new dimension to the project.
The film is written and directed by Jagdeep Singh Warring, making it his directorial debut. Warring has previously been associated with Punjabi storytelling as a writer, and Thaapi marks his move into the director’s chair. Neeru Bajwa has also expressed her support for Warring’s storytelling vision and the film’s meaningful subject.
A Bigger Theatrical Journey Ahead:
Produced by Smarters Films and Neeru Bajwa Entertainment, Thaapi has also garnered considerable theatrical support. In June 2026, Panorama Studios secured a deal for the film’s theatrical release in Pan India and international regions. In July, the studio revealed it had secured global theatrical distribution rights for Thaapi and two additional Punjabi films.
The film is currently slated for a worldwide theatrical release on October 16, 2026.
